Where to Stay in Trang
Your guide to the best areas and accommodation types
Trang splits between a railway city and a scatter of Andaman islands. The city delivers hotels near the station, dim sum at dawn on Sai Road, and minivan connections to the coast. The islands, Ko Ngai, Ko Mook, Ko Kradan, sit 40 kilometres west by road and then speedboat from Pak Meng pier.
City beds run budget to solid mid-range. The islands and coast swing from fan bungalows to one genuine luxury resort at Si Kao.

The city's commercial core runs from the railway station along Phra Ram VI Road to the clock tower. At first light the air carries the sharp smell of roasting pork and the sound of bamboo steamers clattering in Chinese shophouse kitchens on Sai Road, the legendary dim sum strip that has anchored Trang's food identity for over a century. The night market on Ratchadamnoen Road fills at dusk with the sizzle of satay and the press of local families. This is the right base for train arrivals. Use Trang as a jumping-off point for the islands.
- ✓ Walking distance to Trang railway station
- ✓ Highest concentration of restaurants and street food in the province
- ✓ ATMs, travel agencies, and pharmacies all within a few blocks
- ✓ Lively night market within easy reach on Ratchadamnoen Road
- ✗ No beach access without a 40-minute drive to Pak Meng pier
- ✗ Road noise from Phra Ram VI during morning rush hours

The broad arc of Pak Meng Beach and the forested headlands of Si Kao district form Trang's mainland shore, about 40 kilometres from the city. At low tide the air carries the smell of salt and kelp across the sand, and longtail boats knock against the wooden pier in a percussive morning rhythm as crews load coolers for the islands. Hat Chao Mai National Park stretches south through mangrove channels where the air turns cool and damp and egrets call across the water. The speedboat pier for Ko Ngai, Ko Mook, and Ko Kradan sits at the north end of the beach.
- ✓ Direct speedboat access to all three main Trang islands from Pak Meng pier
- ✓ An uncrowded mainland beach with almost no tourist infrastructure
- ✓ Hat Chao Mai National Park trails and mangrove channels immediately accessible
- ✓ Excellent fresh seafood restaurants at the pier end of the beach
- ✗ Very limited accommodation options. Properties fill early in peak season and the choice is narrow.
- ✗ Almost no evening activity beyond the pier restaurant strip

Ko Ngai, also called Ko Hai, sits closest to Pak Meng pier. It makes the easiest first stop in the Trang island chain. Coral reefs hug the eastern shore. The water shows shifting greens and blues. You can read reef detail without a mask. Casuarina trees line the beach. They sigh in afternoon wind. After dark, silence rules. The Andaman lapping sand becomes the only sound. No through roads. No traffic. No shoreline vendors.
- ✓ Shortest speedboat ride from Pak Meng among all Trang islands
- ✓ House reef accessible from the beach at high tide without a boat
- ✓ quiet atmosphere with no through traffic or beach vendors
- ✓ Several dining options for a small island, open throughout the day
- ✗ Bring a book. Activities are thin. Swimmers tire fast. Snorkelers too. Boredom follows.
- ✗ Some bungalow resorts run on generators that cut power after 10pm

Ko Mook draws the biggest crowds in the Trang group. Tham Morakot anchors the draw. This swim-through tunnel cuts limestone and opens into a sunlit inland lagoon. Cave walls drip. The water smells cool and fresh. Farang Beach on the west holds the island's best sand, wide and firm at low tide. A Muslim fishing village occupies the east. Morning prayers wake it. Nets thwack soft as they spread to dry. Ko Mook offers more accommodation than any other Trang island.
- ✓ Tham Morakot ranks among southern Thailand's most dramatic natural sights.
- ✓ Farang Beach sand is wide and clean across most of the tide cycle
- ✓ Broader accommodation range than any other Trang island
- ✓ Regular speedboat links to the mainland and to Ko Ngai and Ko Kradan
- ✗ Busier than Ko Ngai or Ko Kradan during peak season, at cave entry times.
- ✗ Some resorts charge peak-season premiums that outrun the facilities on offer

Ko Kradan sits furthest from the mainland of the main Trang islands. The distance shows. Day-tripper numbers drop noticeably. The pace slows another notch. The western shore curves in a long arc of white sand above a coral garden that begins in water barely knee-deep. At low tide the exposed reef smells of warm salt and algae. Corals display greens and deep purples visible without a mask from the surface. The island is small enough to walk end to end in 20 minutes. At dusk the light turns the Andaman a deep amber. It holds for several minutes before the sky darkens.
- ✓ Best hard coral coverage in the Trang archipelago by most measures
- ✓ Fewer day-trippers than Ko Mook and a quieter overall atmosphere
- ✓ West-facing beach delivers reliable long sunsets visible from every resort
- ✓ Underwater visibility regularly reaches 15 metres or more in dry-season conditions
- ✗ Longest speedboat ride from Pak Meng pier. Uncomfortable in shoulder-month swells
- ✗ One small shop on the island. Limited supplies make resort restaurants the only practical option for most meals

Kantang sits 22 kilometres south of Trang city at the mouth of the Trang River. It was a former rubber and tin export port. Its Sino-Portuguese shophouse facades have aged to a warm rust-and-cream patina. The river smells of brine and engine oil at the working ferry dock. The sound of boats crossing to Ko Libong carries across the humid afternoon air. Ko Libong is one of the last significant dugong habitats in Thailand. Almost no international visitors reach Kantang. Its preserved shophouse streets feel unperformed. Heavily visited historic towns rarely manage this.
- ✓ Ferry access to Ko Libong, Thailand's most significant remaining dugong habitat
- ✓ Beautifully preserved Sino-Portuguese architecture with no tourist overlay
- ✓ Local restaurants serving southern Thai food at prices far below anywhere on the tourist trail
- ✗ Accommodation is sparse and basic. A day trip from Trang city is the practical choice for most visitors
- ✗ No English-language signage. Navigation on arrival requires patience and offline maps

Air-conditioned hotels near Trang's railway station, from atmospheric Chinese shophouse guesthouses to full-service properties with pools.
Best for: Train arrivals, food travelers, and anyone using Trang city as a hub for island day trips
Fan or air-conditioned timber bungalows run by small operators on Ko Ngai, Ko Mook, and Ko Kradan, from stilted jungle huts to polished beachfront cottages.
Best for: Travelers wanting direct beach access and a slower pace without resort-scale infrastructure or crowds
A handful of structured resorts exist. Think eco-boutique properties on Ko Mook. The full-service Anantara sits on the Si Kao mainland coast.
Best for: Couples and honeymooners. Travelers who want consistent amenities. An on-site restaurant without logistics.
Chinese-heritage guesthouses in Trang city. Basic village rooms in Kantang. These are the most characterful beds. The least expensive in the province.
Best for: Solo travelers and budget visitors. Sleep inside the city's real daily rhythm. Not behind a resort wall.
Booking Tips
Insider advice to help you find the best accommodation.
Many Ko Mook and Ko Kradan properties take reservations by email or phone only. A resort appears unavailable on Agoda or Booking.com? Contact it directly. Rooms are often available. They were never loaded onto the platform.
Trang city hotels near the station see an increase. The nights before early-morning speedboat departures. In December and January, book the city hotel at the same time as island accommodation. Not as an afterthought.
Ko Ngai and Ko Kradan resorts commonly close from June through September or October. Swells make speedboat crossings impractical. Confirm with each property that it is open on your travel dates. Do this before booking flights into Trang.
Ko Libong is the dugong island. Reached by ferry from Kantang. It has a single small eco-resort and a handful of homestay rooms. Watching dugongs is the primary goal? Secure this accommodation months ahead during the dry season.
When to Book
Timing matters for both price and availability.
Reserve island accommodation 4-6 weeks ahead for December through February. Trang city hotels need at least two weeks in that same window.
April, May, and October bring uncrowded beaches. Lower rates come with acceptable sea conditions. One to two weeks ahead covers most properties.
June through September brings monsoon swells. Many island speedboat routes close. Some Ko Ngai and Ko Kradan resorts shut entirely. Trang city hotels remain open. They take walk-ins.
Secure island accommodation before finalizing flights. The beds are the pinch point in Trang. Not the transport.
